Edwardsville woman dies in accident

An Edwardsville woman, 45, died after her car collided head-on with a semitrailer Thursday on Interstate 35, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol report.

Melissa Kay Thomas was driving a 2004 Kia northbound on I-35, lost control of her vehicle, crossed the median and drove into the path of a southbound 2007 Freightliner semitrailer.

The truck was driven by a 48-year-old man from New Boston, Ohio. A New Boston, Ohio, woman, 49, who was a passenger in the truck, was treated and released at Newman Regional Health Center.

The crash occurred at 12:05 p.m., 8 miles east of Emporia.
