Hearing in equipment theft case continued

? A hearing for two men recently indicted in federal court for allegedly transporting stolen equipment and vehicles has been continued for a week.

During an appearance Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan., Michael L. Goss, 47, Kansas City, Mo., and Sheldon M. Trieb, 24, Tonganoxie, said they had not yet hired attorneys. They told Magistrate James P. O’Hara they still intend to obtain their own attorneys.

O’Hara delayed arraignments and a discovery hearing for Goss and Trieb until 10:30 a.m. next Tuesday.

Goss and Trieb each were indicted on one count of conspiracy to defraud and 16 counts of transporting stolen property and aiding and abetting. Court documents outline incidents of vehicles and construction equipment being transported to various locations after being taken from other locations in the Kansas City, Lawrence and Topeka areas.

A third man faces similar indictments. Jason K. Smith, 24, Lawrence, has an attorney and isn’t due back in court until Oct. 15.
