Rescue workers resume search for missing boy

? Rescue workers continued their search Thursday for a 9-year-old boy who disappeared into the muddy waters of the Kansas River north of Wabaunsee.

The recovery effort includes two helicopters, five boats and crews looking along the banks, said Shawnee County Sheriff Lt. Martha Lutz.

The child was playing on a sandbar with family members and friends when he disappeared Wednesday afternoon.

A seven-hour search was called off just after dark Wednesday night and crews started to look again at 6 a.m. Thursday.

The Kansas River near Maple Hill is a popular place for canoe trips, nature walks, mushroom hunting and late-night parties.

It was the second major rescue effort in the past 10 days on the Kansas River. Last week, rescue workers recovered two bodies after a search for two men who went missing after their canoe and raft flipped.
