Greyhounds will be transferred or adopted

? The Wichita Greyhound Park will put some dogs up for adoption and transfer others to different tracks or return them to greyhound farms when the park closes, park officials said.

Bob Mowery, who runs Race the Wind Greyhound Adoption, said he’s been getting calls from people worried about greyhounds in wake of a Sedgwick County slot machine proposal’s failing. The measure, which called for slot machines to be allowed at the park, lost by 343 votes last week.

Owner Phil Ruffin has said he will close the park – which employs some 300 people – within 90 days.

Mowery said people were afraid the dogs would be put to sleep. But that’s not going to happen.

“We will be here until every dog is gone,” he said.

Race the Wind, which works with Wichita Greyhound Park, has 52 dogs available for adoption, and Mowery expects that number to grow when the track closes, although officials have said some of the nearly 400 dogs at the park will likely be transferred.
