Charges upgraded after beating victim dies

Three men have been charged with murder after the man they were accused of beating three weeks ago died of his injuries.

Shawnee County District Attorney Robert Hecht on Friday filed first-degree murder charges against Myron DeShawn Causey, 32, Jeremy L. Kincy, 21, and Arthur Wiseman III, 24, all of Topeka.

Causey and Kincy were charged July 23 with aggravated robbery and aggravated battery in connection with the July 17 beating of Randy Lyman, 46, outside a Topeka apartment building.

Wiseman was arrested on the same charges several days later.

Hecht alleged that Causey and Kincy tried to rob Lyman in the building’s elevator, but he pulled out a knife to protect himself. When they got outside, however, Lyman was knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked in the head, body and legs.

Lyman, who never regained consciousness, died Friday of his injuries at a Topeka hospital, police said.
