Man gets 4-year prison term in deadly crash

? A man who was high on the hallucinogenic drug PCP when he caused a deadly Valentine’s Day crash has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison.

Verton T. Gee Jr. also was ordered Friday to pay $3,871 in restitution to cover funeral costs for Jazmine Simmons, 17. Gee’s restitution to cover medical bills has not been determined yet.

Gee pleaded guilty last month to involuntary manslaughter. He was driving a sport utility vehicle when he rear-ended a car stopped at a red light and fled. Simmons, a passenger in the car, died a week later from her injuries.

As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to dismiss a felony charge of eluding a police officer and a misdemeanor count of leaving the scene of an injury accident.

Before the sentence was imposed, Gee told Wyandotte County District Judge J. Dexter Burdette and Simmons’ family that he regretted causing the crash.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I never meant for it to happen.”
