Topeka ? A Topeka woman was killed and a Tecumseh man was seriously injured in a bike collision on the Lake Shawnee Trail.

Paula Lucas, 54, of Topeka, was riding west and Thomas Heikes, 58, of Tecumseh, was riding east Thursday evening when their bikes collided head-on, according to the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Martha Lutz said emergency crews were called to the scene about 7:50 p.m. Both Lucas and Heikes were taken to Topeka hospitals. Lucas died from her injuries at the hospital. Heikes sustained serious injuries, but his condition was not released.

Neither rider was wearing a helmet. The accident was under investigation by the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office.
