Guardsmen to return from Afghanistan today

A 10-member group of Kansas National Guardsmen will be welcomed home today after completing a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

The ceremony will be in Topeka’s Nickell Memorial Armory, 2722 S.W. Topeka Blvd.

The soldiers were members of an embedded training team deployed in June 2006 to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Their mission was to mentor and train soldiers of the Afghan National Army and personnel of the Afghan National Police.

“What these soldiers did was vital to our larger mission in assisting the Afghan government in establishing stability” said Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting, the adjutant general. “In addition to sharing their skills and training with the Afghan military and police, they also helped foster better relations between us and the Afghan people.”
