— A district judge in Johnson County has been named to the Kansas Court of Appeals by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.

Steve Leben, who also is an instructor at the Kansas University School of Law, was the only judge among 20 applicants for the job.

The two other finalists were Glenn Braun, a Hays attorney, and Steven Obermeier, an assistant district attorney in Johnson County.

The appeals vacancy arose in January when Sebelius appointed Judge Lee Johnson to the Supreme Court to replace retiring Justice Donald Allegrucci.

It was Sebelius' seventh appointment to the 12-member court. She said Monday that Leben is not only a well-regarded judge, but a respected teacher, as well. He is an instructor at the KU School of Law and previously has taught at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

No date for Leben's swearing in has been set.
