Neosho clerk resigns following investigation

? Neosho County’s top elections official has stepped down after an investigation found evidence of possible violations during the Nov. 7 general election.

County Clerk Wayne B. Gibson Jr. resigned on Friday after he and his attorney, Steve Stockard, met with county commissioners.

The commissioners agreed to retain Gibson as an “on-call adviser/consultant” to “allow for a smooth transition of records and fulfillment of legal obligations required of the clerk’s office,” they said in their minutes.

Gibson, who has served as clerk for almost 36 years, will remain a county employee through June 6. He declined to comment under advice from his attorney.

County Attorney Melissa Dugan said in a statement that she and Sheriff Jim Keath asked the Kansas Bureau of Investigations to investigate numerous complaints lodged during the general election.

She said investigators found possible evidence of election crimes, including poll books not ready and present at voting precincts, voters being turned away from polling places and unqualified people being allowed to vote.
