Many addictions

To the editor:

It should come as no surprise that many religious proponents are voicing their discontent with the recently passed gambling bills.

Addictive behavior can manifest itself in a variety of ways.

Millions of dollars have been squandered by folks who think a $10 donation to a televangelist will solve their problems.

They are operating on the same blind faith that makes a gambler believe the million-dollar progressive could become a reality.

Absolving the millions, for many rich preachers, has resulted in gold-plated rewards for a few. Take a look at the size of the televangelists’ churches and homes, the cut of their suits, the vast riches these purveyors of faith have amassed. Preying on the trust and faith of desperate people who are expecting to get something for nothing is something religious leaders have practiced for years. Everything in excess can be harmful.

There is no proof whatsoever that we can buy our way to heaven or gamble our way to hell. The odds are in our favor to make wise, informed decisions about our own wealth.
