Topeka Zoo exhibit to house nocturnal animals

? The Creatures of Darkness are coming to the Topeka Zoo.

Nocturnal animals such as owl monkeys, bats and foxes will have their own home, thanks to a $250,000 donation from Capitol Federal Foundation announced Tuesday.

The Creatures of Darkness exhibit, scheduled to open in 2009, will be housed in a 2,000- to 3,000-square-foot building. However, the creatures will be tricked into changing their sleeping hours, so that visitors to the zoo can see them awake and active during the day.

The Creatures of Darkness exhibit is one of seven projects being developed under an agreement with the Friends of the Topeka Zoo and the city as part of the $5 million Zoo Tomorrow Capital Campaign.

Gary Clarke, zoo director emeritus and honorary chairman of the capital campaign, said the gift brings the total to half of the $2.5 million goal, which the city will match.
