Casino proposed for Kansas Coliseum

? Expanded gambling has not yet been voted on by Sedgwick County residents, but at least two commissioners are already floating the idea of putting a destination casino at the Kansas Coliseum complex.

The future of the Britt Brown Arena, where Wichita Thunder hockey games and concerts are held, has been uncertain since voters here approved in 2004 a downtown arena sales tax. Some of the tax money is being used to renovate pavilions at the Coliseum complex, but no decision had yet been made on the arena.

Commission Chairman David Unruh, who proposes demolishing the arena, said he is convinced the coliseum is the best place to locate a casino. He noted the site’s accessibility from I-135 and said it would be a good fit with the Wichita Greyhound Park and the new Wild West World Theme park.

Commissioner Gwen Welshimer also backed the idea, noting the county already has several large building projects and doesn’t need the additional costs of renovating the arena.

The idea also intrigues former Wichita Mayor Bob Knight, who heads a development group that wants to put in a $300 million casino in Park City. His group holds an option for land across from the racetrack, but he said the project could be moved to the coliseum.

“I’m certainly willing to explore it,” he said. “It has the potential of being a great site. It has amazing infrastructure and accessibility.”

Two other commissioners, Tom Winters and Tim Norton, said they were neutral on the proposal.

“There’s a million different ideas floating out there,” Norton said.
