School district enrollment climbs

Lawrence Public Schools has had a 2.9 percent increase in enrollment of nearly 300 students in the last year, according to an official headcount taken today for the state.

The headcount, which is used to determine how much money the district will receive in state funding, shows there were 10,300 students in local schools today, an increase of 297 students over the 10,003 recorded last year.

The biggest boost has come from students who are enrolled at the Lawrence Virtual School, which conducts its classes via computers.

The Virtual School’s enrollment climbed by 193 students – nearly 75 percent – since last year, going from 259 students to 452 students.
