Overland Park will offer live Internet feeds of traffic spots

? People about to take a trip through Overland Park will soon be able to watch live video feeds on the Internet of some of the city’s busiest intersections and streets.

Overland Park officials think the city is the first in the Kansas City area to offer live video feeds. The service, which costs $225,000, should be available in two to three weeks at www.opkansas.org.

On the Missouri side of the metropolitan area, Kansas City, Independence and Lee’s Summit offer drivers the Scout system, which offers snapshots on the Internet of key locations along the interstates but does not offer live video from city streets.

On the Overland Park system, drivers who want to avoid traffic jams will be able to pull up a city map showing where video cameras and message boards are positioned. Dragging a cursor across the icon will pull up pictures of traffic or whatever message is being flashed on the message board. The city also plans to show where each vehicle crash occurs and how many lanes are blocked.

Overland Park will provide live video from 15 of the most congested areas of the city, as well as still photos from 25 other locations. The number of live feeds could increase if the service proves to be popular, city officials said.

The Scout system, at www.kcscout.net, offers snapshots of 90 locations, which are refreshed every 30 seconds, along with information about vehicle speeds.

Those who run the Scout system say they are constantly asked about adding live video to the Web site.

Scout spokeswoman Dianna Kidwell said the system does not offer video because it does not have enough capacity or the right equipment in place. Video images used by television stations is different from what is needed to transmit the images to a computer, she said.

Scout has increased its capacity for access to the site, Kidwell said, and is being streamlined so it requires less capacity to use. But more equipment still needs to be purchased to make streaming video possible, she said.

“It’s definitely on our list of things to do,” she said.
