Woman injured after driving car into East Lawrence home

A truck sits parked in the kitchen of a house located near 15th and Prairie streets after an intoxicated woman smashed into the house after stealing the truck. The woman, who was arrested shortly after the accident, attempted to steal another vehicle to flee the scene of the accident early Friday morning.

A 19-year-old Lawrence woman was taken to the Lawrence Memorial Hospital early this morning for injuries she sustained after driving a stolen truck into a East Lawrence home.

The Lawrence Police Department said the woman of interest had stolen the truck from Penny’s Construction around 5 a.m. and was driving southbound on Prairie Street when the car ran into the kitchen of a single-story home located at 1401 E. 15th Street.

The owner of the house was asleep in the living room, but was not injured in the accident. The truck hit the natural gas meter requiring a representative from Aquila to shut off the gas to the home.

Police were unsure of the cause of the accident and were waiting for the suspect to receive medical care for head and neck injuries before further investigation.
