Calif. leaders see KCK as development model
Kansas City, Kan. ? Leaders in Fontana, Calif., are looking at Kansas City, Kan., as a model for the city’s future development, officials said.
City Council members, county supervisors and officials at the California Speedway visited Kansas Speedway last week to see how that city used the race track to encourage economic growth.
“The belief has been Kansas City, Kan., has done an effective job of creating an economy based around the speedway, where one did not exist prior to the speedway arriving,” Fontana Mayor Mark Nuaimi said.
Developers in Kansas City have built a 400-acre retail and entertainment complex next to the speedway. The so-called Village West development is seen as a driving force in the area’s economic renewal.
County Supervisor Paul Biane said he planned to ask the board to request proposals from consultants to analyze the possibilities for hotel, retail and office uses in the area around the California Speedway.
