Lawrence now officially has a larger population.

City Manager David Corliss said Thursday that he had received a letter from the U.S. Census Bureau saying the agency had increased the city’s population to 88,664, up from a previous estimate of 81,816. The city had challenged the Census Bureau finding, claiming that it had underestimated the city’s growth.

The boost was expected after the Census Bureau announced Monday that it had increased the county’s total population estimate from 102,914 to 111,519 people.
