Probation for molester upsets girl’s family

? The family of a 7-year-old girl who was molested by a Galena man is upset that he will not spend any time in prison.

Donald Bellamy, 69, was sentenced Monday by Cherokee County District Judge Kent Lynch to two years in Community Corrections, an intensive form of probation.

Under a plea agreement announced in August, Bellamy entered an Alford plea to two felony counts of aggravated indecent solicitation of a child. With an Alford plea, the defendant does not admit guilt but agrees the prosecution has enough evidence to get a conviction.

The victim’s mother said Jennifer Brunetti, assistant Cherokee County attorney, negotiated the plea agreement without consulting her, and told her to sign a document at the courthouse five minutes before Bellamy was to enter his plea.

Brunetti disagreed, saying she received the family’s consent. She also said she thought it would be difficult to obtain a conviction because the girl would have a difficult time testifying and would be further traumatized by having to do so.
