Rashawn T. Anderson, center, a suspect in a downtown shooting, speaks with his attorneys during a hearing Friday in Douglas County District Court.
Trial has been postponed until January for a Topeka man charged with a fatal shooting early this year outside a downtown night club.
Rashawn T. Anderson was due to stand trial starting Nov. 27, but his attorneys say they need more time to receive and review evidence, including photos, videos and transcripts of roughly two dozen witnesses who gave statements during a formal inquisition before Anderson was charged.
"We're still in the process of receiving materials and evidence in this case," defense attorney Mark Manna told Judge Paula Martin on Friday during a court hearing.
Martin rescheduled a six-day trial for Jan. 22. Anderson has waived his right to a speedy trial, and he said, "Yes, ma'am," when Martin asked if he agreed with the request for more time.
Anderson, 19, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Robert Earl Williams, 46, early on the morning of Feb. 5 after a hip-hop show let out at The Granada, 1040 Mass. The shooting came after an alcohol-fueled argument that was captured on video outside the club.
Williams' widow said that shortly before the shooting Williams had been arguing with a family friend and a stranger had intervened in the dispute.
Anderson also is charged with shooting and injuring another man, Pierre Burnette, but defense attorneys are seeking to have that charge dismissed.
Anderson's attorneys on Friday asked Martin to prevent prosecutors from making reference to any "gang affiliation" Anderson may have.
Assistant Dist. Atty. Amy McGowan said prosecutors didn't plan to go into that. Attorneys say there's no evidence that gang affiliation had anything to do with the shooting.
Anderson is being held in the Douglas County Jail and will be back in court Nov. 3 for a hearing on more pretrial motions.
In addition to Williams' death, Anderson is charged in Shawnee County with the July 18, 2005, shooting of 18-year-old Christopher McCoy Caraway, who was found dead in the parking lot of a Topeka apartment complex.

Wow, two muder raps at the same time? Anderson is danm lucky he's not facing capital murder charges. In fact, if I was the victims' families, I would get together and press the county attorneys for capital murder charges. “Mens rea” (google that if you don't know what it means) exists in the Lawrence shooting, and without knowledge of the Topeka incident, I'd say it's prevalent there as well.
In short, if found guilty, Anderson should never see the light of day again, and a just world should see him laying on a gurney in Eldorado or wherever, after eating his last meal.

Seems like this guy is a little gun crazy. I hope he has been remanded w/o bail. I don't want to chance being anywhere near this guy (guilty or not) if he is out on the streets.
Someone should have taught him some conflict resolution techniques that didn't involve hot lead flying.
