A scammer is using Lawrence Police Department details to try to trick people out of money, the department said Tuesday.

In a Facebook post Tuesday evening, LPD said two separate people walked into police headquarters and said they had been called by an officer saying they had a warrant on them for missed jury duty and needed to pay to avoid arrest. The scammer used the name of an LPD officer and the caller ID number that appeared matched a police number.

“It was NOT us,” the post said. “We will not ask for money over the phone.”
