Suspect denies role in killing of pregnant Wichita teen

? A man accused of having a pregnant Wichita teen killed in June because her family wanted to pursue statutory rape charges against him says he wasn’t involved in her death.

In four 20-minute phone interviews from the Sedgwick County Jail last week, 20-year-old Elgin “Ray-Ray” Robinson spoke with The Wichita Eagle about the case for the first time since his June arrest.

Robinson is charged with capital murder for allegedly paying $500 to have 14-year-old Chelsea Brooks killed. Chelsea was nine months pregnant at the time of her death, and Robinson said DNA tests confirmed a few months ago that he was the father of her baby.

Attorneys in the case are under a judge’s order not to speak publicly about the case, but Robinson told The Eagle his lawyers wanted him to reach a plea agreement to accept life in prison rather than go to trial and face a possible death penalty.

“There will be no plea coming from Elgin Ray Robinson for capital murder,” he said. “I can’t plead guilty to something that I didn’t do. I just can’t do that. It won’t happen.”

Charged along with Robinson is Theodore Burnett. A judge last month delayed their arraignment hearing because defense attorneys wanted more time to continue discussions with prosecutors.

The arraignment now is scheduled for Nov. 29.

A third suspect, Everett Gentry, already has pleaded guilty to capital murder as a juvenile and testified during the preliminary hearing for Burnett and Robinson.

Gentry said he picked Chelsea up from a skating rink June 9 and that Burnett strangled her. He said Robinson wanted Chelsea killed because the family wanted to prosecute Robinson for statutory rape.

Chelsea’s body was found about a week later in a shallow grave in neighboring Butler County.

As part of an agreement with prosecutors, Gentry was allowed to plead guilty to capital murder as a juvenile instead of as an adult. He could be eligible for parole after 25 years. With an adult conviction, he could have received a mandatory 50 years in prison.

Because Gentry was 17 when the killing occurred, he could not have received the death penalty.

Robinson said he knows most people think he’s a murderer, but he insisted he isn’t. Asked if he thought Chelsea still would be alive if he had not had a relationship with her, Robinson said, “Yeah,” and then: “I’m not sure if I know how to answer that question.”

Robinson said he doesn’t know what happened to Chelsea.

“All I know is Mr. Gentry’s story because I was not present,” he said. “Mr. Gentry’s story has changed numerous times. From what I know, she was strangled by one of Everett’s friends, which I highly doubt is true. (The) preliminary hearing was crazy. Everyone got up there and committed perjury.”

And while Robinson acknowledged having another girlfriend besides Chelsea, he insisted he was not using Chelsea.

“I was very much in love with her. I loved that girl. It just got crazy,” Robinson said.

He said he met the girl through his 15-year-old stepsister and that Chelsea started leaving him letters.

“She had a mind of her own,” he said. “(A) lot of people think she was manipulated. You couldn’t if you wanted to.”

But months before Chelsea was killed, her mother, Terri Brooks, obtained a protective order to try to keep Robinson from her daughter.
