Dry weather lets fall harvest proceed

? After a week of heavy rainfall, drier conditions across Kansas allowed farmers to make significant progress in harvesting fall crops, the Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday.

Ninety-eight percent of the wheat has been planted, the same as last year but one day ahead of the five-year average. Eighty-eight percent has emerged, one day behind last year but consistent with the five-year average.

Wheat condition declined slightly to 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 36 percent fair, 49 percent good and 11 percent excellent.

The corn harvest is 93 percent complete, three days behind last year and the five-year average.

The sorghum crop is 96 percent mature, compared with 98 percent last year and 97 percent for the five-year average. Only 67 percent has been harvested, compared with 81 percent last year and 75 percent for the average.

Sorghum condition was rated 11 percent very poor, 24 percent poor, 34 percent fair, 26 percent good and 6 percent excellent.

Among other crops:

l Sunflower harvest is 69 percent complete, compared with 84 percent last year and 78 percent for the five-year average. Sunflower condition was rated 8 percent very poor, 18 percent poor, 39 percent fair, 29 percent good and 6 percent excellent.

l Eighty-seven percent of the soybeans have been harvested, compared with 92 percent last year and 86 percent for the five-year average.
