Kansas crop planting ahead of schedule

? Planting of most major crops is ahead of schedule across Kansas, despite being slowed by last week’s rain, the Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service said Monday.

About 98 percent of the wheat has jointed, compared with 93 percent last year and 83 percent for the five-year average. The wheat’s condition was rated 14 percent very poor, 23 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 23 percent good and 3 percent excellent.

Sixty-eight percent of the corn has been planted, 13 percent ahead of both last year and the five-year average. Thirty-two percent of the corn has emerged, compared with 21 percent last year and 19 percent for the five-year average.

Sorghum is 6 percent planted, 1 percent ahead of both last year and the five-year average. And 95 percent of the oats have been planted, 5 percent ahead of last year but the same as the five-year average.

Soybean planting was only 1 percent behind last year, with 5 percent of the crop planted.
