Two killed in bus crash

? Two men, one a Trego County commissioner, were killed Thursday when a school bus collided with another vehicle near the small town of Ogallah in western Kansas.

Trooper Doug Shearer examines the scene from atop an overturned school bus as law enforcement officers with the Kansas Highway Patrol work the scene of a fatal school bus accident between the bus and a van Thursday, March 30, 2006, near WaKeeney, Kan., in rural Trego county. The drivers of the van and school bus were killed and two students received minor injuries in the accident.

Toby Lynd, 49, was driving the bus when it struck a van driven by Brett Deines, 32, of WaKeeney, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two students from Trego-WaKeeney USD 208 also suffered minor injuries and were taken to Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital. Eight other students riding in the bus were not injured.

The bus was on its way to pick up a student on a county road when it collided with the van in an unmarked intersection, Highway Patrol spokesman Allan Lytton said. The bus rolled at least once before settling on its side in a ditch.

The Highway Patrol was alerted to the accident by one of the students, who called his parents on a cell phone. Lytton said the glaring sun about 7:30 a.m. may have had something to do with the accident, and it appeared neither driver was wearing a seat belt.

“It’s a tragedy,” Lytton said. “We hate to see this. It’s an unfortunate thing.”

Lynd, who was elected to the Trego County Commission in 2002, had driven a bus for the school district for 21 years with an “excellent” record, Supt. Robert Scheib said.
