One injured when tornado touches down
One person was injured late Thursday afternoon when a tornado carved a path through Montgomery County in southeast Kansas, emergency officials said.
Straight-line winds overturned a semitrailer and damaged structures in northeast Kansas, but there were no immediate reports of injuries there.
Joy Moser, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Division of Emergency Management, said the injured person was in a home that was hit by the tornado.
It touched down shortly before 6 p.m. in the community of Havana, southwest of Independence, Moser said. The tornado traveled northeast, overturning trailers at Elk City Lake before hitting the community of Le Hunt, just northwest of Independence.
Sebelius declared a state of disaster emergency in Montgomery County.
