Police investigating possible link in killings

? Police on Wednesday continued to investigate two homicides that occurred in the same neighborhood hours apart, but officials had not determined if they were related.

Lt. Jeff Easter said O.B. Donta L. McDonald, 26, and Christopher Lamont Spain Bey, 28, were shot about two hours apart and within a mile of each other on Monday, just south of the Wichita State University campus. The homicides were the fifth and sixth in Wichita this year.

Easter said on Wednesday that officers have not uncovered anything new and that an unusually large number of detectives were working on the cases.

“We’re still working every angle of it,” he said. “There’s nothing definite that we can tie both of these together.”

Police received the first call at 7:39 p.m. Monday. A neighbor said he heard a woman screaming and found McDonald lying face down in the yard.

McDonald was pronounced dead at Wesley Medical Center less than an hour later.

“He really didn’t have a chance,” O.B. Bohanon said of his son, a barber and youth basketball coach. “I don’t understand it.”

At 9:37 p.m., emergency dispatchers received a call about another shooting. Police said Spain Bey was found shot in a duplex where he was staying near the Wichita State campus.

Spain Bey was also taken to Wesley Medical Center and pronounced dead.
