Suspect accused of bigamy is arrested
Interview causes investigation into her identity
Elm Creek, Neb. ? A 33-year-old woman has been arrested in Elm Creek, accused of being a bigamist from Pennsylvania.
Julia Bish – known in Elm Creek as Julia McGovern, the wife of Kevin McGovern – posted a cash bond of $5,000 Friday to get out of Buffalo County jail.
“The district attorney has made a decision to extradite,” said Lt. Chad Treber, a spokesman for the Westmoreland County (Pa.) Sheriff’s Office. “We’re abiding by that and will bring her back to answer to the charge of bigamy.”
A January interview with the Lincoln Journal Star led to her discovery.
A woman calling herself Julia McGovern talked to the Journal Star for a story about the Rev. Tom Swartley, of Elm Creek.
He had made a controversial anti-abortion, anti-evolution prayer to open a session of the Nebraska Legislature.
The story eventually came to the attention of a Randy Bish, who e-mailed the Journal Star last Sunday.
Bish said Julia McGovern was his estranged wife and that her legal name was Julia Bish.
Randy Bish said Julia was sought on Pennsylvania bigamy charges, accused of marrying at least two other men while she was married to him.
Pennsylvania State Police confirmed Randy Bish’s information.
Randy Bish sent the Journal Star stories about the bigamy case, including the transcript of a CNN interview of “Julia McGovern” and her attorney.
Julia this week said she has been divorced from Randy Bish for a decade and that later marriages to Lawrence Judah, Mark Hunt and Kevin McGovern didn’t overlap.
Kevin McGovern, who says he married Julia in May in Ohio, says they have known each other since 2000. They moved to Elm Creek shortly after their marriage for a “change of pace,” he told the Kearney Hub newspaper in a story published Saturday.
“It appears right now that (our marriage) is invalid because of the matters back in Pennsylvania,” he said. “But I’ve said to Julia, ‘I will marry you 10 times if I have to until we get it done right.’
“So, if we have to get married again, we have to get married again.”
He said they had an infant daughter.
“I understand Julia’s motives. I understand who Julia is, her community and her family and her church support her and feel that in due course of time people will understand what this action was about, why it came about and be reconciled with it,” he said.
Randy Bish said he married Julia in June 1990 in Pennsylvania and that they had five children.
He said their divorce case was pending.
On Wednesday, after communication with Pennsylvania authorities, the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department arrested Julia in Elm Creek.
If she fights extradition, the process could take a month. If not, she could be back in Pennsylvania by Friday.
