State board member decides not to run again
Topeka ? A southeast Kansas member of the State Board of Education has announced she will not stand for re-election.
Iris Van Meter of Thayer said she wanted to spend more time with her family.
Van Meter is part of the 6-4 majority that has voted for science standards that criticize evolution, for restrictions on sex education and to hire Education Commissioner Bob Corkins, who had advocated against public schools.
Two Republicans and a Democrat have filed to run for the seat.
