Principal praises three teens who drowned

? Three Kansas teenagers who died in a weekend swimming accident off Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast were destined for good things, their high school principal said.

“I think it’s too bad the rest of the world doesn’t get to see those guys grow up and become successful citizens,” Greg Cartwright, principal of Labette County High, told The Wichita Eagle on Tuesday.

Andrew Harpstrite, 17, Jessica Pierce, 17, Danielle Tongier, 18, and Spanish teacher Brett Carlson, 26, apparently were swept to sea Saturday by currents off Palo Seco beach, near the town of Parrita, about 180 miles south of the Costa Rican capital of San Jose. Carlson’s body had not yet been recovered as of Wednesday morning.

The group was on an educational tour that began June 5 and was to end Wednesday, but the remaining members returned Monday after the drownings.

Tongier had just graduated from high school and planned to attend Kansas University, while Harpstrite and Pierce still were students at Labette County High School.
