Corkins to announce reorganization plan

? Kansas Education Commissioner Bob Corkins today will unveil his reorganization plan for the state education department, including the selection of two new deputy commissioners.

Corkins plans to select a deputy for learning services to replace Alexa Posny, who left earlier this year to be director of the Office of Special Education Programs with the U.S. Department of Education.

And Corkins will announce the selection of a deputy for school innovations, a new position that has stirred opposition from some members of the State Board of Education.

The announcement will be made at 11 a.m. today during a news conference.

Board member Carol Rupe, R-Wichita, said she questioned the need to divide the learning services division to create a commissioner for innovations.

“The learning services division was already dealing with innovative ideas in schools,” she said.

Corkins has said the changes are needed to meet future challenges.
