Boy playing with lighter damages 6 buildings
NEWTON ? An 8-year-old boy playing with a lighter started a fire Tuesday that damaged six buildings and delayed train traffic for three hours, the fire department said. No injuries were reported.
Two detached garages and an unoccupied two-story duplex were destroyed in the fire, according to Deputy Chief Mark Willis with the Newton Fire/EMS Department. Three other homes were also damaged, he said.
“Investigators confirmed an 8-year-old playing with a lighter in a garage started the fires,” Willis said.
The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad in central Newton was shut down for three hours as firefighters laid hose lines across the rail tracks after the fire was reported about 1 p.m.
