Heat may be factor in train derailment

A Union Pacific train derailed near St. Marys on Monday, toppling 30 coal-filled cars and ripping out railroad ties at the crossing.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the train may have run off the tracks because 100-plus-degree weather may have caused them to warp.

A spokesman for Union Pacific said it was too soon to give an official cause of the derailment, saying it was still under investigation. He said the railroad hoped to have the scene cleaned up by tonight.
