KANSAS CITY, KAN. ? A neighbor was charged Thursday with murder and arson in a house fire that killed an 8-year-old girl.

Firefighters found the body of Jewel Morse late Sunday in a hallway of her home.

Her mother and six of her siblings had escaped the burning house.

Karl Bowlin, 41, was arrested Wednesday and charged Thursday with one count each of first-degree felony murder and aggravated arson. The Wyandotte County district attorney’s office said Bowlin was being held on $100,000 bail.

Authorities have not said what caused the fire, but residents said people in the neighborhood had been shooting off fireworks on Sunday.
