Three novels to stay in Blue Valley curriculum

? The Blue Valley school board has decided to leave three books on high school reading lists over objections of some parents.

The parents said Toni Morrison’s “Song of Solomon,” Robert McCammon’s “Boy’s Life” and Pat Conroy’s “The Lords of Discipline” contained profanity, vulgar language, sexually explicit scenes and violence.

The board voted 5-1 Monday, with Dan French dissenting, to keep the Conroy and Morrison books. McCammon’s book was retained 5-0, with French not voting because he hadn’t read it.

Under district policy, the books may not be challenged again for two years unless they are added to the reading list for a different grade level.
