Highlights from the Kansas Legislature

Highlights of Tuesday’s activities at the Kansas Legislature:

– Legislators who’d pushed for a lawsuit challenging state funding of abortions for Medicaid recipients suffered a setback when a Shawnee County district judge dimissed the litigation.

– Kansans would get a report card on Supreme Court justices and judges appointed by the governor and retained by voters to help decide whether they should remain on the bench under a bill considered by the House Judiciary Committee.

– Rebuffed last year by regulators, the state’s largest provider of local telephone service asked the Senate Utilities Committee to move Kansas toward deregulating the prices charged consumers.

Also:

The Senate Federal and State Affairs Committee endorsed a bill to overturn rules by the Kansas State High School Activities Association that prevent swimmers from competing on school teams and club teams at the same time.

Clock is ticking:

Tuesday was the 16th day of the session, out of 90 scheduled.
