Highlights from the Kansas Legislature

Highlights of Tuesday’s activities at the Kansas Legislature:

¢ Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ staff outlined her proposed $11.7 billion state budget, which didn’t consider recommendations from a legislative audit calling for at least an additional $400 million in K-12 funding to satisfy a Kansas Supreme Court mandate.

¢ The governor’s proposed budget did include additional funds for public safety and a 2.5 percent pay raise for some state employees.

Also:

¢ The State Board of Education sent legislators a request for changing the state’s charter school law and funding all-day kindergarten statewide at a cost of $77 million.

¢ Legislative committees began meeting, with the Senate Judiciary Committee opening hearings on proposals to combat Medicaid fraud.
