Breast-feeding rights bill sent to governor
TOPEKA ? A bill protecting a woman’s right to breastfeed in public was approved by the House today, sending the measure to Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.
Sebelius has said she hasn’t seen the details of the bill but that she is a strong supporter of breast-feeding.
The House approved the measure 119-4. The legislation won a unanimous vote in the Senate last week.
The bill says a woman can breast-feed any place she has a right to be. It also will excuse women who are breast-feeding from jury duty.
Women from across the state, including Lawrence, pushed for the measure, citing instances when they were insulted, harassed and even threatened for breast-feeding their babies.
Health officials also testified that breast-feeding is healthier for infants.
