Volunteer firefighters OK after accident

The husband-and-wife De Soto volunteer firefighters injured in Friday night’s fire truck crash have made it out of the hospital.

Gregg and Alayne Parrish made trips around De Soto Saturday to let people know they were doing OK- but were just a little sore. “You don’t expect things like that to happen when you’re going to help others,” said Gregg Parrish, who now has three staples in his head.

The two were in a tanker truck full of 750 gallons of water. They were responding to a barn fire on Evening Star Road near the Douglas-Johnson County line.

As they turned right off the Kansas Highway 10 exit, Gregg Parrish lost control of the truck. It rolled over and off the road’s west side. It landed on its wheels.

Emergency workers from Eudora and DeSoto and officers with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office helped the two out of the vehicle. They were taken by ambulance to Overland Park Regional Medical Center and later released.

The couple said they thanked their fellow firefighters and medical workers for the response.

“We’re always on the giving end, not the receiving end,” Gregg Parrish said.
