Two firefighters injured

Two De Soto firefighters were injured Friday evening when a tanker fire truck rolled while they were on the way to a barn fire near the Douglas-Johnson County line.

A Johnson County Sheriff’s officer rescued one of the firefighters from the vehicle, Lt. Casey Wilder said.

The truck sustained severe damage to its cab.

The firefighters had just exited Kansas Highway 10 and turned north about 6 p.m. onto Evening Star Road. The truck crashed just north of the interchange about one mile south of the fire.

Wilder said officers believed water shifted inside the truck and caused the driver to lose control. The truck landed off the road on the west side.

The two firefighters were transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center by ambulance. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the accident.

De Soto Fire Chief Kevin Ritter said he expected the firefighters to be released from the hospital Friday night. As for the fire, he said it involved a barn, but details about any possible injuries were unavailable Friday night.
