Man killed at train crossing when truck couldn’t stop in time

? A 41-year-old Newton man died Monday when the truck he was in collided with a train, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department said.

The truck slammed into the third car of the southbound train about 8:30 a.m. Authorities on Tuesday identified the victim as Riley Abel Jr. He died at the scene.

The rural crossing is marked only by an X-shaped rail warning sign called a crossbuck, along with a warning sign several hundred feet before the crossing.

The victim worked for a contractor that was burying cable not far from where the collision occurred. He was pulling a piece of equipment with his truck, Mason said, and given the weight of the truck and the trailer he simply couldn’t stop in time.

Monday’s collision was the fourth involving a train in the county this year, but the first fatality.
