Ottawa High alumni to be recognized on Wall of Honor

Ottawa High School next month will induct three alumni as the 10th class in its Wall of Honor.

The new inductees are: 1949 graduate Ralph Raffelock, a former retail manager and a philanthropist who lives in Great Bend; 1977 graduate Gwen Poss, a standout Kansas University track hurdler and the first principal at Olathe Northwest High School; and 1959 graduate Ralph Gage, chief operating officer of The World Company, which owns the Journal-World.

The selection committee included students, alumni and teachers.

“It’s really incredible when you start looking at graduates from a small Kansas high school and the things that they accomplish,” said Susan Geiss, a teacher and coordinator for the Wall of Honor.

A 1956 Ottawa graduate, Joe Harkins, of Lawrence, was inducted in 2000. Harkins is now Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ top adviser on energy policy and planning.

The school will honor the new inductees at a banquet at 6 p.m. Sept. 21 at the high school.

Tickets cost $10 and will be available between Aug. 15 and Sept. 14 from the school’s office or by contacting Geiss at (785) 229-8020.

Official induction will be Sept. 22 during half-time of the school’s home football game.
