Dead newborn identified

? The Reno County Sheriff’s Office has identified the mother of a dead newborn girl, three weeks after the child’s body was pulled by a dog from a creek, just west of Hutchinson.

Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson said the 16-year-old mother has not been charged, and authorities would not release her name Wednesday.

“One of our officers recalled a previous case at a location where a woman had been pregnant, and we did some investigating on that – and sure enough that is our mother,” Henderson said.

She had been the focus of the investigation for two weeks.

The full-term baby girl, whom investigators named Baby Jane, was discovered March 14 after a homeowner found the body in his backyard. The family dog had apparently dragged the infant from a nearby creek.

“It was very much a priority,” Henderson said of the case. “Anytime you lose a life – especially a young child – that way.”

It is not known yet whether the baby was born alive or how she died. Investigators are waiting on toxicology reports and results of other tests to determine that, Henderson said.

The sheriff’s office said in a news release that the mother has not been taken into custody and is home with family members.

The investigation continues with officers executing six search warrants in Reno, Butler and Harvey counties.
