Goddard ? A school bus driver suffered a heart attack while driving his morning route Monday and later died.

Bob Wegerer was driving about eight to 10 students when he was stricken about 7 a.m., Goddard schools spokeswoman Annette Singletary said. Wegerer lost control of the bus and it drifted off the road, through a ditch and into a wheat field.

None of the students was injured. One used a bus radio to report the driver’s condition, Singletary said.

Wegerer, a driver since 1998, was transported to a Wichita hospital, where he died. Counselors were made available to the passengers, who are students in middle school and high school.
