Bill requiring ‘move over’ goes to governor

? Motorists soon could be breaking the law if they don’t move over when they see an emergency vehicle or road work crew parked on the shoulder of a four-lane highway.

A bill to that effect cleared the Legislature on Friday and was sent to Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.

It says that someone driving on a four-lane highway must move into the left lane to pass by a road crew or emergency vehicle with flashing lights, if it is safe to do so. The law now applies only to law enforcement vehicles.

The fine for failing to yield to a work crew would triple to $90. The fine for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle would remain at $180.

The Senate approved the bill unanimously in February, and the House passed it, 123-1, last week. But House members made a technical change, requiring another review in the Senate. On Friday, senators voted to accept the House’s change, again on a 40-0 vote.
