Remains belong to woman last seen in ’73

? The remains of a woman who disappeared 32 years ago will be buried Sunday in the Dance Ground Cemetery west of Mayetta.

Louella J. “Ludy” Monroe was 30 when last seen in 1973. Skeletal remains discovered by a construction crew about five years ago were identified recently through DNA analysis.

“She never was officially reported missing,” said Brown County Sheriff Lamar Shoemaker. “We contacted the Indian management, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the FBI, the sheriff’s office and every place else we could think of.”

He said a suspect who is now deceased had said that Monroe left the state to visit relatives. Kyle Smith, deputy director of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, said his agency was still investigating the death.

Smith said the remains were identified through mitochondrial DNA testing by the FBI.

Monroe, born in Topeka, was a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and the Kickapoo Tribe. A supper in her honor will be held Saturday at the Kickapoo Community Building west of Horton.
