Father of OKC victims renews call for compensation
OKLAHOMA CITY ? The father of two children who were seriously injured in the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building renewed his call on Tuesday for compensation from the federal government for victims’ families.
Jim Denny’s son Brandon, then 3, and his daughter Rebecca, who was 2, were among six children at America’s Kids day care center inside the building when the fertilizer and fuel oil bomb detonated less than 100 feet away. Fifteen children at the center were killed. Altogether, 168 people died in the attack.
“This press conference today is totally and completely about compensation for the families of the 168 loved ones lost and for compensation for the survivors, such as Brandon and Rebecca and our family,” Denny said, flanked by his wife and two children on the steps outside the state Capitol.
Denny said he quit his job after the bombing to provide the 24-hour-a-day care his children required. His wife still works as a federal employee, but Denny said the family recently had to sell their home to keep up with bills and other expenses. He said he has received no compensation from the state or federal government.
Denny didn’t cite a specific dollar figure he is seeking, but said he believes families of the Oklahoma City bombing should receive similar compensation as the families of victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
