A look at the State Board of Education races
Half of the 10-member State Board of Education faces voters every four years, and in 2006, the odd-numbered districts are on the ballot. The filing deadline for candidates is June 10, 2006. The primary election is Aug 1; the general election is Nov. 7.
1st District
Jefferson, Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties and eastern Douglas County.
Incumbent Janet Waugh, D-Kansas City, first was elected in 1998. She voted against new science standards for public schools that question evolution. No challengers from either party have emerged.
3rd District
Most of Johnson County, including Olathe and parts of Lenexa and Overland Park; Miami and Linn counties; most of Franklin County and part of Anderson County.
Incumbent John Bacon, R-Olathe, first was elected in 1998. He voted for the standards and faces primary challenger Harry McDonald, also of Olathe. A Democrat from Olathe, Don Weiss, also is running.
5th District
Forty western Kansas counties plus parts of Jewell and Clark counties.
Incumbent Connie Morris, R-St. Francis, was elected in 2002 and supports the standards. She faces Sally Cauble, of Liberal, in the primary, and Democrat Tim Cruz, former Garden City mayor, in the general election.
7th District
Fifteen central and south-central Kansas counties, parts of Clark and Sedgwick counties and most of Dickinson County.
Incumbent Ken Willard, R-Hutchinson, won his seat in 2002 and voted for the standards. No primary or general election challengers have emerged.
9th District
Fifteen counties in central and southeast Kansas, and parts of Anderson, Greenwood, Marion and Osage counties.
Incumbent Iris Van Meter, R-Thayer, supports the standards. First elected in 2002, she has drawn a Democratic opponent, Kent Runyan, of Pittsburg.
