Parents accused of cruelty to children

? A central Kansas couple is free on bond after being accused of abusing the man’s two children and forcing them to live in “deplorable” conditions for several years.

Rodney R. Wilson, 51, and Lori Wilson, 43, were in Reno County court Wednesday to face child abuse charges.

Lori Wilson has operated a home day care off and on since 1991, but prosecutors said there were no reports of children at the day care being harmed or mistreated.

The Wilsons were arrested Tuesday following a month-long investigation. The charges allege that the couple “intentionally inflicted cruel and inhuman corporal punishment upon the two children,” a 15-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl, Reno County Dist. Atty. Keith Schroeder said.

Authorities said the Wilson children were malnourished and forced to endure “deplorable” conditions, including confinement in small spaces.

The children were removed from the Hutchinson home April 12.

Schroeder did not return a phone call from The Associated Press Thursday.

Officials with the Hutchinson Correctional Facility said Rodney Wilson was fired on Wednesday. He had worked there since 1988, as a corrections officer and in the transportation hub.

Lori Wilson’s license to operate a day care for up to 10 children was suspended April 29 by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Sharon Watson, spokeswoman for the KDHE, said the license was suspended to “protect the health and safety of the children pending an investigation.”

Both Rodney and Lori Wilson posted $15,000 bonds Wednesday and are scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing June 3.
