Bond decision scheduled for murder suspect

Wichita (ap) — A federal magistrate plans to decide Friday whether to set a bond for a man charged with killing Greenwood County Sheriff Matt Samuels.

The sheriff was shot and killed Jan. 19 while serving a search warrant at a home near Virgil. Scott Cheever, 23, of Virgil, was indicted last week by a federal grand jury on murder and other counts.

Cheever made an initial appearance under tight security Monday before U.S. Magistrate Karen Humphreys, who read him the nine counts and said she would have a decision later on bond. Cheever is being held without bail in the Sedgwick County Jail.

Cheever was charged first by the state in Greenwood County District Court, but federal prosecutors took over the case because the federal charges could result in the death penalty if the Justice Departments give prosecutors authorization to seek it.

Eight charged in brawl that led to teen’s death

Olathe (ap) — Eight people have been charged in connection with a weekend brawl at an apartment complex that left one person dead and five others injured, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Two adults, Keith Mitchell Gurwell, 34, and Christopher Aguallo, 18, were charged with six counts each of aggravated battery. Gurwell also was charged with one count of contributing to a child’s misconduct, and Aguallo faces an additional count of conspiracy to commit aggravated battery. Bond was set at $150,000 for Gurwell and $250,000 for Aguallo.

Johnson County Dist. Atty. Paul Morrison said six juveniles were charged with six counts each of aggravated battery and one count each of conspiracy to commit aggravated battery.
